TEACHING

Adam began his teaching career as an ESL teacher in Taipei, Taiwan. He then taught middle school in Oakland as a Teach For America corps member before moving to Boston. He worked for over a decade as a classroom teacher in urban schools, including eight years at Excel High School in South Boston. While at Excel, he served as lead teacher, coaching new teachers, creating a peer observation program, and designing curricula.  He was honored as a two-time recipient of the Sontag Prize in Urban Education and was awarded a fellowship at the Lynch Leadership Academy at Boston College. After leaving the classroom, Adam served as Director of Instruction at the Henderson K-12 Inclusion School in Boston, designing and facilitating whole school professional learning, coaching teams of teachers, and coordinating assessments and data analysis. Adam currently holds a leadership position at the nonprofit Engaging Schools, working with leaders, teachers, families, and community partners in districts nationwide on systems change for educational equity.

In addition to his work in public schools, Adam has taught creative writing at higher education institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Harvard Kennedy School, and the University of Wisconsin, as well as in prisons and community events. Adam also offers consultations on writing projects, working with a wide range of clients on short fiction, the novel, memoir, individual essays, and book-length non-fiction. Along with his wife, author Jennifer De Leon, Adam offers coaching on using storytelling to build inclusive community through their organization Story Bridge. Contact Adam for for more information.
