TEACHING

Adam began his teaching career at a language immersion preschool in Taipei, Taiwan. He then taught middle school in Oakland as a Teach For America corps member before moving to Boston. He worked for over a decade as an English teacher in urban schools, including eight years at Excel High School in South Boston. While at Excel, he served as lead teacher, coaching new teachers, designing and delivering whole school professional development, creating a peer observation program, and designing curricula.  He shared his passion for literature with his school community by developing a creative writing program, editing a student publication, and bringing in acclaimed visiting authors to enrich student engagement with the written word. He was honored as a two-time recipient of the Sontag Prize in Urban Education and was awarded a fellowship at the Lynch Leadership Academy at Boston College. After serving as Director of Instruction at the Henderson K-12 Inclusion School in Boston, Adam currently works as a consultant with the educational nonprofit Engaging Schools, supporting educational equity in urban districts nationwide.

In addition to his work in public schools, Adam has taught creative writing for many years at higher education institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Harvard Kennedy School, the University of Wisconsin, Saint Mary’s College, and Framingham State University. He has taught a range of courses from creative writing workshops to storytelling seminars to crafting opinion articles from personal experience, as well as craft seminars on topics ranging from point of view to structure to political engagement through fiction. Adam also consults on writing projects. He works with a wide range of clients on short fiction, the novel, memoir, individual essays, and book-length non-fiction. Particular areas of interest include education, travel, politics, and music. His own writing been inspired by his experiences living and traveling in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, as well as working with immigrants and refugees in the United States, so he is particularly interested in assisting on projects dealing with diverse settings and characters.
